and where?

I was in Asheville, NC in 2001 when I really got into it.
The people around me loved it and it seemed so organic.
and everything was so strange and new...

the sound followed me to Amsterdam that fall and haunted the small flat where we lived..

1998, shortly after the release of Aeroplane Over the Sea. I was going to college in Seattle and working in the coffee shop of the downtown Borders Books & Music. At that point there were some pretty cool cats manning the music department, so I'd spend my lunch breaks listening to whatever new stuff they put in the listening stations. I remember going back and forth between the NMH release and the newest Momus album "Ping Pong", trying to decide which to buy and finally deciding on NMH. I quickly grew to love the album. I also remember a few months later cursing the fact that I was only 18 when NMH came and played at the 21 and over Crocodile Cafe. Had I known I wouldn't have a later chance to catch them live, I'd have probably undertaken some sort of covert operation to get in to the show. But alas.

I caught them at that Crocodile Cafe show.
I went thinking that they were a completely different band. I had heard a song on KEXP (then KCMU) that I absolutely loved and for some reason thought that it was NMH. I decided to go to the show and when they (he) opened up with "Two Headed Boy" my jaw just dropped. It clearly wasn't the band that I had heard on the radio but I was blown away by the show. I of course picked up their CD right away as well as Elf Power's who opened the show.

Since middle school I'd given the finger to the radio and found out about new bands through reading as many reviews in as many music mags as possible--and in early 1998 (my senior year in high school) "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" was garnering some glowing reviews (most notably with a five-star rating from AP, which was far more reputable at the time than it is now) and I'd remembered that their previous LP "On Avery Island", unheard by me at the time, had been placed on Spin's year-end "Best Albums You Didn't Hear" in 1996, that particular year-end list being one which turned me on to many a great record during the 90s so...I went ahead and bought it.

To sum it up, I spent most of the rest of that year listening to a two-sided recorded cassette on my tape-walkman, one side "Aeroplane" and the other side "Featuring Birds" by Quasi. Both of NMH's records are wonderful, but "Aeroplane" is without a doubt (in my humble opinion) one of the GREAT albums of the 90s, indie or otherwise.

A friend of mine moved to Athens, GA and sent me a mix tape of his music and some of his friends bands in Athens. He had gone to Tech in Ruston, LA and that's where he met a good portion of the Elephant 6 Orchestra. My first encounter with Jeff was at the Fugazi concert we all went to at the 40 Watt. He kept on stepping on my toes and then looking behind him with a quiet "sorry."

    Not until 2001, sadly.

My tiny private liberal arts college had revamped their radio station for 24-hour broadcasts over the summer, and the manager had made a short playlist of only the music he thought apropos.

When I switched from being Assistant MD to being the Library Director, I snatched control of the 24-hour broadcast and began extensively revamping it. While doing so, I found a track called "2-Headed Boy," and began playing it over and over and over again til my boyfriend bought the record. Then I got "On Avery Island" and the Jeff Mangum live performance.

It was the summer of 1998 and I was travelling through Europe and got stuck at the train station in Madrid with no idea where to turn next. This guy approaches me and my travelling partner, "Are guys Americans?". We sat and bullshitted for a while and decided to get on the same train as these cute girls from Denmark who were headed to San Sebastien. Of course, halfway through the night, the train split and we never saw them again, but we were left with each other. My new friend gave me a tape of Aeroplanes Over the Sea, which I listened to religiously for the next year.
