Hello. I just wanted to let you know that my little book about "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" came out last week. It's in the 33 1/3 series, published by Continuum, and includes previously unpublished photos and interviews with many of the people who were part of Elephant 6.

Like I said in another post, I've been back in touch with Jeff M. lately and he seems in pretty good spirits. After a few months of emailing back and forth, I finally broached the subject of doing an interview since we both had a good time doing that back in '97/ '98, and in that time have spoken intermittently of doing it again...

Anyway, to start with at least, I have 7 questions to ask the man, via email. I want to send them to him quickly. This is serious! Thanks for your time.

What does NMH's music mean to you?

I've always thought of myself as a non-judgemental person. But I must admit that I do judge people by their musical tastes. Although, this doesn't always give a true representation of who a person is, I do believe that people who are deeply affected by the sounds, feelings, and imagery given to us by Jeff Mangum are very special to me. Even though I will never meet many of those people, just knowing that they exist gives me solace. I've yet to figure out what this music is really doing to me, but I hopefully have a long lifetime to understand. In a way, it's like getting a glimpse of the beauty in the unattractive, the pleasure in pain, and the feelings of connectedness while in isolation.

I was in Asheville, NC in 2001 when I really got into it.
The people around me loved it and it seemed so organic.
and everything was so strange and new...

the sound followed me to Amsterdam that fall and haunted the small flat where we lived..

I just found Willie Mason- Where the Humans Eat CD in the dollar bin at amoeba. track 11 is REALLY good. i don't really care for the rest of the album but.... OXYGEN is really good. you can hear the nmh and devendra banhart influences.

Yeah aeroplane floored me when I first heard it in the spring of 99 - like some guy standing naked and singing his goddamn heart out - it fucking destroyed me - can ya do that can ya open up and just expose and express your heart like that?!!
I found myself making music with friends a couple years later - it was a incredible experience - making music with people that is
a few years later I have found devotional music and it to is singing from the heart - Krisna Das - Jai Uttal - Paul Russil ect - I found my mind to be a bit cynical about it all at first but isn't the mind cynical bout everything? So yeah if you like NMH try some Krishna Das - "breath of the heart" is good and I think its actually produced by rick rubin and Mike D is one of the singers
